Juma mosque will not be evicted at once

Sabayil district court has stepped back from implementing its verdict over Juma mosque, according to Turan News Agency.

Yesterday, the court’s judge Yusif Karimov said, the court will not demand mosque community to leave the mosque immediately because of holy Muslim month.

The court decision came after the mosque’s Shiite community called the courts ruling the violation of religious freedom.

Juma prayers said, the ruling was to punish them for their Imam Ilgar Ibrahimoglu who has been taken into Bayil pretrial detention center in Baku in December on charges of attending clashes between police and opposition members in October 2003 after presidential elections in Azerbaijan.

Juma mosque was built in 12th century. It was turned in to a warehouse in 1937. Later in 60s it was transformed into a carpet museum. It regained a mosque status in 1992 .This was a year later that Azerbaijan became independent state.
