Clarification on Religious Liberty in Burma

A ZENIT article on Jan. 19, "Burma Not Treating the Church Fairly, Says Missionary," did not reflect the overall remarks given in a conference here by Father Vito del Prete, secretary of the Pontifical Missionary Union.

Father del Prete explained that in his address he "stressed the point that the Catholic Church is a religious minority, as it is, and she is free to act and work according to the law of the country, and she is allowed by the government to implement many initiatives for the welfare of the people."

"Relations between the Church and the government are friendly, and there is a mutual cooperation for the uplifting of the people," the missionary clarified.
