Mbarara's Resident District Commissioner, Joseph Arwata has vowed to arrest leaders of some mushrooming religious organisations in the district whom he says are sexually abusing women.
"There are these mushrooming organisations [where] women are being abused in the name Jesus Christ. Honourable Minister from now you are going to hear that the RDC of Mbarara has arrested these cult leaders," Artwata said during celebrations to mark the International Women's Day at Kakyeka Stadium, Friday.
Minister of State for Ethics and Integrity, Miria Koburunga Matembe was the chief guest. The celebrations were also attended by Archbishop of Mbarara Archdiocese, Rt Rev. Emmanuel K. Bakyenga and district leaders.
The RDC who was contributing to the day's theme; United Against Domestic Violence, Rape and Defilement, did not disclose any of the cults.
He said that the three crimes undermine human dignity and respect and so the law should be faster and emphatic in apprehending the culprits. He said that since August last year, 100 cases of defilement and 13 of rape have been recorded in Mbarara.
"Those statistics do not mean well for the future of the district. Those responsible should rise above animal instinct and be human. Even animals have to wait for the mating season," he said.
