Rajasthan state Commission for Women has proposed a legislation against the practice of witchcraft, which would provide for imprisonment of up to ten years for branding a woman as a witch.
The legislation is urgently needed against the evil practice that inflicts mental and physical torture on women many of whom, unable to withstand the pressure, resort to commiting suicide, Chairperson of the Commission Pawan Surana said here today.
To prepare a draft legislation for sending the same to the government for enactment by the assembly, a seminar would be organised on January eight in Jaipur, Surana said.
The Commission has circulated a preliminary draft of the proposed bill -Rajasthan Prevention of Witch Practices Act- making the crime under the legislation as non-bailable and congnizable, she said.
Legal experts, representatives of government and non government bodies and other academics will discuss the draft bill at the seminar, she added.
