Police: Motorcycle-riding members of radical Muslim sect kill officer, rob bank in Nigeria

Maiduguri, Nigeria — Authorities say members of a radical Muslim sect attacked a bank in northeast Nigeria, killing one police officer and stealing an undisclosed sum of money.

Borno state police commissioner Simeone Midenda said the attack happened Wednesday in Damboa, a city about 55 miles (90 kilometers) south of the state capital Maiduguri. Midenda said sect members used motorcycles in the attack, which also left three people injured.

The sect, known locally as Boko Haram, has carried out a string of assassinations and bombings in northern Nigeria in its campaign to implement strict Shariah law in Africa’s most populace nation.

The sect claimed responsibility for the Aug. 26 suicide car bombing at the United Nations headquarters in the country that killed 23 people and wounded 116 others.
