Doomsday cult leader stays in Fiji

Australia - A doomsday cult leader who fled Australia last year will not be extradited from Fiji unless police can provide more evidence of fraud.

South Australian Director of Public Prosecutions Stephen Pallaras said yesterday he would not recommend the extradition of Rocco Leo, who allegedly defrauded members of his cult, as police had not provided sufficient evidence to give a reasonable chance of prosecution.

"On the material that we have been provided with . . . there are no reasonable prospects of conviction," he said. "What we've got at this stage doesn't cut it."

Mr Leo fled Australia last year just before SA police raided several of his Adelaide properties, seizing guns, fuses, detonators, extendable batons and 35,000 rounds of ammunition.

Mr Leo is being held in Fiji with his partner Mari Antoinette Veneziano and her brother Joseph for breaching their visas.
