Murfreesboro, USA – A Republican presidential candidate has apologized for comments he made about Islam on his campaign trail, including on a stop he made in Middle Tennessee.
Republican Presidential candidate Herman Cain met with Muslim leaders in Virginia Wednesday, saying he was truly sorry for comments that may have betrayed his commitment to the constitution and the religious freedom it guarantees.
Cain stopped in Rutherford County earlier in July, even making a comment on the proposed Islamic center. He had said then he opposed plans for the center and did not consider the facility to be an "innocent mosque."
The Islamic Center of Murfreesboro, he said, would represent "another way to gradually sneak Shariah law into our laws."
He also reportedly made comments saying he would not want a Muslim bent on killing Americans in his administration.
Cain has apologized for the statements, saying the comments that may have "betrayed" his commitment to the constitution and the religious freedoms it guarantees.
He also acknowledged that Muslims, like all Americans, have the right to practice freely their faith and that most Muslim Americans are peaceful and patriotic.
