Police blame radical Muslim sect for shooting, killing senior officer in northeast Nigeria

Maiduguri, Nigeria - Police say members of a radical Muslim sect shot and killed a senior officer in the northeastern city of Maiduguri.

Borno state police commissioner Mohammed Abubakar told journalists Tuesday that the deputy superintendent of police in the region died after the attack early Tuesday morning. Abubakar said gunmen on a motorcycle carried out the attack.

No arrests have been made, though Abubakar blamed a sect known locally as Boko Haram for the attack.

Boko Haram, which means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language, has attacked churches and engineered a massive prison break in recent months. The group has killed police officers and soldiers manning checkpoints at will since July 2010.
