Underage marriage: JTM backs call to probe Tabligh sect

Tawau, Malaysia - The Jemaah Tabligh Malaysia (JTM) backed the call by Women, Family and Community Development Minister, Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, to investigate a tabligh sect led by the now infamous Shamsudin Ajaib.

Members of JTM have also expressed regret over the underage marriage involving Shamsudin with an 11-year-old girl, which has caused some quarters in the community here to look at JTM members negatively.

Chairman of the Badan Bertindak Pencinta Nusa (Cintanusa), Zulkarnain Mahdar, said he had received many telephone calls from JTM members backing the call to investigate the sect.

He said Shamsudin had attempted to spread wayward teachings when he claimed heaven awaits parents who marry off their young daughters.

Towards this end, he advised the public not to perceive JTM members negatively as Shamsudin was acting alone and it had nothing to do with the mission of JTM.

Shahrizat had, on Sunday, urged the police to investigate the sect headed by Shamsudin who had married and took off with the young girl in Kelantan.

Meanwhile, Zulkarnain said Cintanusa has 13,300 members nationwide and some of them are involved in JTM.
