Sect leader acquitted in a case

Ambala, India - A local court today acquitted Baba Piyara Singh Bhaniarawala, a sect leader, in a case which was registered against him under a section of the Essential Commodities Act in Noorpur Bedi police station in Punjab on October 20, 2001.

Later on the direction of Punjab and Haryana High court the case was transferred to Ambala.

According to prosecution the case was registered against the Baba on the complaint of Food and Supply Department on charge of running a brick kiln illegally.

Baba's counsel Jaspal Singh pleaded that the case was "politically motivated".

Four other cases against the Baba are still pending in the court of the CJM. The court has fixed January 16 for the hearing of pending cases.
