Vatican City - The Vatican says Pope Benedict XVI plans to visit the area hit by a deadly earthquake in the Abruzzo region east of Rome soon.
Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi says the visit is expected to take place soon after the Easter holiday Sunday.
Benedict was announcing it himself during his public audience Wednesday.
The pope earlier in the week sent his condolences to the victims.
