New York, USA - Five churches in the New York neighbourhood of Harlem have collected hundreds of weapons in exchange for cash.
More than 500 rifles, handguns and shotguns were handed over by late Saturday -- no questions asked. Each person who brought a firearm was given a 200 dollar (£125) bank card. BB guns and air pistols are accepted in exchange for a 20 dollar (£12.57) bank card.
The buyback programme is sponsored by the New York Police Department and the Manhattan district attorney's office in an effort to remove weapons from city streets. The programme has removed about 5,000 guns from New York streets since it was started six years ago. The city has $100,000 (£62,850) in funding left to finance the effort.
