Turkish court queries acquittal of sect leader

Ankara, Turkey - The Turkish Supreme Court of Appeals on Monday ordered a review of the acquittal of a high profile religious sect leader who had been charged with trying to overthrow the secular state.

On March 7, Fettullah Gulen was acquitted of the charges against him but the Supreme Court of Appeals ordered that an examination of the evidence in the case be conducted to determine if the dates and nature of the case are accurate.

Gulen, who has links to a number of senior members of Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party, operates a network of schools around the world, has interests in publishing and the media and business.

He has been living in the United States for most of the past decade.
