Vermont Catholic Church Settles Lawsuit

Vermont's Catholic Church has paid $120,000 to settle a long-running lawsuit against one of its priest.

In return, Michael Bernier, 46, of California, has dropped his court case against the Rev. James McShane and the Diocese of Burlington.

Bernier claimed that while he was a child and member of the St. Mary's Church and School in St. Albans, McShane committed harmful and offensive sexual contact.

The lawsuit said the diocese knew about some of McShane's alleged misconduct but took no action.

McShane resigned as a Rutland pastor last year.

He worked as director of the state church's Office of Youth Ministry and chaplain of the Vermont Boy Scouts and Catholic Camp Holy Cross in Coclhester.
