Costly love spell lands Greek astrologer in court

Salonika, Greece - A female astrologer in the northern Greek city of Salonika was charged with fraud after pocketing 145,000 euros (204,000 dollars) from a woman to counter a spell supposedly cast on her former lover, a report said Monday.

The unidentified woman had gradually exacted the sum over a nine-month period with promises to induce her friend's lover to come back, the semi-state Athens News Agency reported.

But the victim eventually despaired and alerted the police.

Astrologers and diviners make a brisk business in Greece where belief in the 'evil eye' still runs strong, and where the reading of palms and coffee-cups can be used to plan relationships and business moves.
