Number of atheists in Russia down - sociologist

Moscow, Russia - Russian society is becoming evermore religious, head of social department at the Social Designing Institute Mikhail Tarusin said.

"The process of exploring the religious space in Russia is so intensive that it is difficult to find any parallels in history," the sociologist said at a press conference in Moscow.

The Stratification of Modern Russian Society study, with the participation of 15,000 people, showed that the number of atheists has halved over the past 15 years, he said.

According to his forecast, the number of people belonging to a congregation will increase several times both in Orthodoxy and Islam over the next 25 - 30 years.
