US Hindus question Fijian standards

Suva, Fiji - A US-based Hindu organisation says it wants to meet with the Fiji Government to raise concerns about the way Hindus are treated.

But Fiji-based Indian religious groups say while they have experienced temple burnings and break-ins, the Government is not responsible.

They have also questioned why an organisation in America has raised such concerns without consulting them first.

The Hindu American Foundation's president, Mihir Meghani, is concerned about some people close to the government making comments about Fiji being a Christian state.

"Making statements that are against the Hindu community just serve to inflame passions and prejudices," he said.

"We think the Government needs to do more with that and it also needs to deal with its own government officials who are engaging in such type of behaviour - it's totally inappropriate in a democracy.

"Especially when the Government is moving from military dictatorship to a more inclusive democratic system."
