German Court: 'Popetown' Cartoon Doesn't Disparage Religion

Berlin, Germany - A German court has rejected a complaint accusing MTV of disparaging Christianity by airing the notorious "Popetown" cartoon.

The show features corrupt cardinals, a buxom nun and an infantile pope who bounces around the Vatican on a pogo stick.

But a leader of the Christian Social Union party said the Berlin court rejected his complaint, ruling that the Vatican spoof doesn't sink to the level of disparaging a religion.

The British Broadcasting Corporation originally commissioned the program but decided in 2004 not to show it after protests from church leaders.

It was broadcast last year in New Zealand, despite a church-led campaign against the broadcaster.

In Germany, the cartoon has stirred protests from the Roman Catholic Church and from conservative politicians, especially in Pope Benedict's native Bavaria.
