Pak bars portals publishing prophet caricatures

Islamabad, Pakistan - All websites publishing the caricatures of Prophet Mohammed have been blocked in Pakistan, Online news agency reported.

Acting on the orders of the country's Supreme Court, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority blocked all such sites on the Internet.

A petition demanding the blocking of the websites was filed by one Muhammad Imran Uppal in the apex court. Uppal also sought a direction asking Internet service providers based in the US to immediately suspend such publication.

Observing that it was an important petition on safeguarding religion and faith, the court directed Pakistan's attorney general to appear before it on April 20 to assist in the matter.
