Lusaka, Zambia - GOVERNMENT will monitor the mushrooming numbers of churches in Zambia to ensure that they operate within the confines of the law.
Home Affairs Permanent Secretary Peter Mumba said Government had been prompted to do so following the proliferation of churches in the country.
The increasing number of churches had precipitated the abuse of the law hence the decision to monitor their operations.
Mr Mumba in an interview in Lusaka yesterday challenged the three church mother bodies to help monitoring the operations.
Government would now take an interest in the activities of the churches and the public should not accuse it of interference.
"As Government we will not sit back and watch people break the law and it is for this reason that we have decided to be monitoring the operations of the churches to ensure laws are not abused," he said.
Government was aware that some churches were engaging in some unbiblical activities.
The declaration of Zambia as a Christian nation did not imply that people should stop obeying the laws of the land.
