Deviant cult in Klang Valley

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - A deviant cult has been recruiting people in the Klang Valley under the guise of teaching them about the Quran.

Known as the "Kumpulan Din" or "Pemuda Kahfi", their recruitment methods are thought to be similar to those of the Negara Islam Indonesia (NII) or Darul Islam sect — a militant group which wants to set up an Islamic state in Indonesia.

A 25-year-old former member of the sect known as "Muhamad", who defected, has decided to inform the authorities of the cult.

"This group is active in Gombak, Ampang, Kajang and Seri Kembangan," he said.

According to him, the group interpreted the Quran literally and rejected the teachings of the Hadith (narrations about the life of the Prophet Muhammad).

The group’s teachings include the idea that members of the cult will eventually form a new "Islamic state".

Followers of the cult likened Malaysia to Mecca before the coming of the Prophet and they will perform a hijra.

Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia president Yusri Mohamad said details of the deviant cult had been sent to the Islamic Development Department and the police.
