Columbus church votes to break ties with Lutheran sect

Columbus, USA — A large majority Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church members have voted to end their relationship with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Concerns have been raised in the church about the direction of the ELCA, most notably a proposal that would allow homosexuals in committed relationships to be ordained and a proposal to bless same-sex unions.

There also have been concerns about an agreement between the ELCA and the Episcopal Church that allows the churches to share clergy.

Trinity members voted 227-27 Wednesday in favor of a resolution to end their relationship with the ELCA, said Trinity's pastor, the Rev. Tim White.

In an e-mail message from the Nebraska Synod, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Bishop David deFreese said the vote was premature because the ELCA's national assembly hadn't made a final decision on ordination and blessings for homosexuals.

Before formally terminating ties to the sect, a consultation between the bishop and the congregation must be held, followed by another vote.
