Melbourne, Australia - TRIBUTES have flowed for former Victorian Governor Dr Davis McCaughey, who died yesterday, aged 90.
Dr McCaughey, who was the state's governor from 1986 to 1992, died at his North Melbourne home with his wife and family by his side.
Dr McCaughey was the architect and founding father of the Uniting Church, the union of the Presbyterian, Congregational and Methodist churches in 1977.
He also was a former deputy chancellor of the University of Melbourne and master of Ormond College at the Parkville University.
His son, James McCaughey, said his father "devoted his life to search for the truth".
Victorian Premier Steve Bracks said the McCaughey family had enriched Victoria's cultural life through their leadership and commitment to the community.
Former Victorian premier Joan Kirner said Dr McCaughey captured the hearts and minds of Victorians. "He didn't stand on ceremony – he connected with people and really cared about people," Mrs Kirner said
