The Path to Peace Foundation will honor Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano and slain papal nuncio Archbishop Michael Courtney for their work in the cause of peace.
Awards will be bestowed Sept. 20, according to an announcement by Archbishop Celestino Migliore, president of the foundation and the Holy See's permanent observer to the United Nations.
The Path to Peace Award, to be conferred on Cardinal Sodano, highlights the Holy See's commitment to world peace and dialogue among peoples. The cardinal will receive the award at New York's University Club.
The Servitor Pacis Award will be conferred posthumously on Archbishop Courtney, 58, the Irish-born apostolic nuncio in Burundi who died in an ambush Dec. 29 near the capital, Bujumbura.
It marked the first time a papal representative was murdered. The ambush is still being investigated.
The Path to Peace Foundation was established in 1991 by the Holy See's U.N. mission. The foundation fosters humanitarian, charitable and conciliatory activities beyond strictly diplomatic parameters.
The Path to Peace Award honors individuals dedicated to the cause of peace on the international scene.
The Servitor Pacis Award is conferred on those who died in the most remote regions for the cause of peace.
