Cong condemns division of school children on religious lines

Congress today strongly condemed the reported division of school children in a Gujarat school on religious lines by asking them to wear different badges and asked the state government to rectify it immediately as it was "violative" of the Indian Constitution.

"We strongly condemn the report that has come from Godhra where children of a school belonging to Hindus are asked to have Saraswati and Muslims stars on their badges ....We call upon the Gujarat government to take immediate steps to rectify it", Party spokesperson Jayanthi Natrajan told reporters.

Assailing the move of the "ghettoisation" of the children on the basis of religion in a state so sacred (Mahatma Gandhi's birth place), she said the two logo systems in a school is "most pernicious" of dividing the nation in the name of religion which would further create enmity between the two religions.

"Such a practice is violative of our constitution and the Congress party condemns it with all its emphasis at its command," she said.
