Jains are the most literate community in India, says a new census report.
According to the first ever census data on religion, Jains possess a 94.1 percent literacy rate - ahead of even the Christian community (80.3 percent), while the national average is 64.8 percent.
Data culled from the census report of 2001 says 59.1 percent of Muslims in India are literate, while the percentage is 65.1 for Hindus, 72.7 for Buddhists and 69.4 percent for Sikhs.
A literate is deemed to be one who knows how to read and write in his mother tongue.
Among women too, the Jains top the list with a score of 90.6 percent. Muslim women fare the worst (53.7 percent).
