China wants Dalai Lama to return

Beijing has renewed its call for Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, to give up his demands for independence and return to China.

The official Xinhua news agency quoted an article in China's Tibet Magazine calling on the Dalai Lama to end his life of exile and return to the embrace of the motherland.

The Dalai Lama, who lives in India, has called for international support for his non-violent campaign to gain Tibetan independence from China, which annexed the Himalayan state in the 1950s.

He is revered by his people as the reincarnation of a long line of Buddhist kings and fled Tibet after a failed revolt against Chinese rule.

The Dalai Lama left hospital in Bombay on Saturday after treatment for a bowel infection.
