Indonesian President stresses role of religion teaching‏

‏ Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri said ‏on Monday religious teaching in the country must refrain from creating ‏militant and fanatic people who tend to make enmity with other religious ‏groups.‏

‏ "Religious teaching that brings about enmity between two different groups ‏will only erode the good tradition and the tolerance of our people," Megawati ‏said at the opening of the working meeting of Religious Affairs Ministry officials, held at the state palace here Monday.‏

‏ The president was quoted by ANTARA news agency as saying that it is felt ‏that current religious instruction has created fanatics who claim to be the best and who make enemies of those who disagree with them.‏

‏ "We have also witnessed the emergence of a certain group of people who ‏think its religion is the most superior and is easily offended," Megawati said.‏

‏ She also urged participants of the meeting to tackle the relevance of substances and methods of religious teaching to the present situation.
