Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo has vowed to continue efforts to expose the activities of some 60 Islamic deviationist sects in Selangor.
Speaking after launching the SMK Ranjau Panjang Parent-Teacher Association meeting in Kapar, he said the state government, through the Selangor Religious Department (Jais), would crack down on the sects.
Dr Khir said deviationist teachings, mostly originating from neighbouring countries, were not beneficial and the state government wanted to guide the followers back to the correct Islamic path.
“We want them to know that the teachings are wrong and we do not want them to go astray. Surely they cannot be angry at us for preventing them from being misled,” he said.
Dr Khir was commenting on the detention of 96 followers and a religious teacher of the banned Islamic sect Tarikat Samaniah Ibrahim Bonjol in a Jais raid at a surau in Sungai Buloh on April 1.
The sect – founded by Syeikh Ibrahim Abdullah from Medan, Indonesia, and especially active in Selangor – was banned in 1998.
