Ministry reassures Christians

KUALA LUMPUR: The Home Ministry has assured Christians that their religious freedom would not be jeopardised.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung said that Malaysians recognised that Islam is the official religion but religious freedom was also allowed in the Federal Constitution.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with members of the Christian Federation of Malaysia (CFM) that represents 5,000 churches of all denominations, Chor said they (CFM) were concerned with the recent spate of events, where five churches were burgled or set on fire.

“The recent incidents are viewed seriously by the Government.

“The police have taken immediate steps to investigate the incidents,” he added.

CFM chairman Datuk Dr Prince Guneratnam urged all Christians to practise patience and overcome evil.

“These were violent acts by some trouble-makers who deliberately attempted to create conflict among the communities,” he said.
