Bushara Flees Over Defilement

Police in Luwero yesterday set fire to the church of the self-styled prophet Wilson Bushara and dispersed his followers who had started regrouping at Bukoto in Kikamulo sub-county.

Luwero DPC Godfrey Taire confirmed the incident and said the reaction followed an incident in which a ten-year-old female follower had been defiled and later died on the way to Kasana Health Centre, July 13.

Taire identified the deceased as Nakato Jennifer a daughter to James Nkamuhabo and Sarah Kokundeka of Mubende. The girl had been persuaded to join Bushara's World Last Message Warning Church and abandoned her parents in Mubende.

Taire said the followers started regrouping and that two of them were arrested. Those arrested are Kato Daniel, 23, and Stella Kyansimire, 51, both residents of Kagala village in Rakai district.

Some followers escaped as police raided the village. It is suspected that Bushara was among them. When traced on his mobile phone, one Stephen Kanyaki said the prophet had travelled to his farm.

Taire said Bushara is wanted by police to make a statement in connection with the girl's death. At Bukoto, police found five fresh graves that indicated some followers had died and were buried secretly.

About four years ago police dispersed Bushara's followers at the same place and found 18 graves in the camp.

Bushara was later arrested and produced in court but set free. He was facing charges of defilement and manning unlawful society among others.

The area LC III secretary for information, Fred Katabalwa said the defiled girl was found bleeding profusely before she died.

Police said the burnt church had two dark corners they suspect were used for subversive acts like defilement.
