India's Christian leaders alarmed by sect activity

Traditional Churches in the southern Indian state of Kerala are alarmed at what they consider poaching of their members by neo-Christian sects.

Satyadeepam ("little lamp"), a Catholic English biweekly magazine published from the state, says the new sects "abound in preachers" who espouse their own doctrines to become "evangelical superstars."

Using names from the Bible -- Exodus, Joshua, New Life, Master Ministry, Covenant, Hiel Gospel--- the sects attract Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox Church members.

An editorial Satyadeepam published in August termed the mushrooming sects the "protestantization" of the Catholic Church.

The new evangelizers parade personal inspiration of the Scriptures as revelation, it lamented, adding that "once reason is frozen and introspection forgotten, words of the Scripture become idols to be worshipped."
