3 Chinese Christians face criminal charges

Three Chinese Christian men were due in court on Monday on charges of passing intelligence to overseas organizations, according to the U.S.-based China Aid Association.

A court in Hangzhou, a city near Shanghai, is trying Liu Fenggang, Xu Yonghai and Zhang Shengqi, who belonged to the same "house church," the aid group said.

House churches are prayer groups not registered with the government, which discourages underground Christian worship.

Liu was detained in October for researching government resistance to Christians in Hangzhou. Zhang, an Internet writer, was arrested the same month in Jilin Province, while Xu, a psychiatrist, was detained in November, according to the aid association.

Court officials could not be reached for comment.

Judges in China usually announce rulings weeks or months after a hearing.
