Archbishop Calls for Peace

THE Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Dr. Livingstone Mpalanyi Nkoyooyo, has urged the rebels of the Lords Resistance Army (LRA), Allied Democratic Foroces (ADF) and their collaborators to stop their activities and consider the problems they have caused the people.

Dennis Ojwee reports that Nkooyoyo also called upon the Sudanese government to stop frustrating the peace process in Acholi.

He was recently speaking at the consecration of the Bishop of Kitgum Diocese, Rev. Benjamin Ojwang, whom he urged along with other clergy in Uganda, to talk less and act more.

Nkoyooyo said this could be done through cooperation in order to wipe out the insecurity that has caused bloodshed and continued suffering to Ugandans, especially the Acholi.

He said Anglican bishops should emulate the former bishop of Kitgum, Macleod Baker Ochola, who fought tirelessly against rebels and even lost his wife in the struggle for peace in northern Uganda.

Nkoyoyo said the bishop has been a great servant of God, who bravely fought to see that peace returns for his flock in the diocese of Kitgum.

"The time has come for us bishops to work hard and talk less. Let us follow in the footsteps of our dear bishop Ochola, who has retired today," he said.

Ochola urged the new Bishop to be courageous enough to voice the needs of his flock. He appealed to the leaders of Kitgum and Pader districts to support Ojwang in developing the diocese.
