Italian missionary dies in Uganda

A 76-year-old Italian missionary has been killed in north Uganda.

Comboni missionary Father Luciano Fulvi was found dead in his room in the Layibi mission, outside Gulu.

It is not clear who killed the priest or why, but he is believed to have been attacked by robbers, says the Missionary News Service Agency (Misna).

People from the surrounding area often seek refuge in the mission at night, fearing attacks by the rebel Lord's Resistance Army.

The group which has been trying to overthrow the government for 18 years and operates mostly in the north of the country.

Missed mass

Father Fulvi was originally from the Italian diocese of Pescia, in the province of Lucca.

Misna said that a fellow priest at the mission noticed the Father Fulvi's door was open after he went to bed on Tuesday night.

The colleague called out to him, but getting no response thought he was asleep and shut the door.

It was only after Father Fulvi missed morning mass and his car and bicycle had not been used that his colleagues went to his room and found him lying in a pool of blood.

Earlier this month two American missionaries and a Ugandan student were shot dead near Yumbe in north-western Uganda.

Warren and Donna Pett and Isaac Juruga were attacked on 18 March by seven men in uniform, according to reports.

They were at the technical college where the couple, who worked for the African Inland Mission, were teachers.

Police say the attackers looted the college and set fire to a number of staff houses nearby.
