Christians Slammed Over Child Abuse

by Joseph Tweneboah, Kumasi, Accra

Christians have been condemned for their role in undermining the rights of children, Mr. Edmund Premoh, President of the Ashanti Children Service of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana noted at the Children Service 9th anniversary celebration of the Light House Presby Church at Tanoso in Kumasi that Christians ought to change their attitude towards children.

Premoh, who is also the welfare officer of the Presby Educational Unit, said bad decision making policies have compelled the country to join the HIPC and said it was shameful.

He said Ghana should not be considered as a poor country since the national resources by God were enough to boast, and attributed lack of God's knowledge by most Ghanaians to our economic consequences.

He noted that churches are guilty before God as a result of their inability to train their members to go off from corruption, mismanagement, abortion, child abuse, human rights abuses and other cankers which have engulfed the country.

"Christians have failed the nation, though they constitute a large number of Ghana's population but all sorts of sin can be found from the land which has diverted the country to join HIPC", Mr. Premoh preached. On his part, Mr. Peter Nuamah, the catechist of the Light House Presby Church noted that most churches have ignored the rights of children and had contributed to child abuse in the country.

He suggested that churches should take back the Mission schools to ensure effective moral training to both teachers and the children. 11-year-old Master Isaac Karikari, who chaired the function, appealed to parents to recognise children as part of God's family arrangement.
