Student Shot Dead By Cultists in Unilorin

A student of the University of Ilorin was shot dead by cultists at the permanent site campus of the university yesterday afternoon in a renewed reign of terror by cult members in the university. So far, the number of deaths in cult-related incidents in the university in the last one week is now seven.

Eye witness account said that cult members stormed the campus and started shooting into the air leading to stampede and pandemonium, thereby throwing the university community into confusion.

Last week, a teacher in the institution's department of Geography, Dr. Abiodun Adeyemi, was shot dead in waht the university authorities described as armed robbery attack. However, recent developments have since proved that the late lecturer might have been killed over cult-related matters.

Sources at the university informed THISDAY that the late teacher, who was described a a strict discilinarian, might have met his death over the screening of final year students of the university.

"As the screening officer of his department, some final year students who had fake certificates were detected. Reports were sent to the authorities and no action was taken. His insistence on justice might have cost him his life," the source said.

According to members of the university community who spoke to THISDAY, they were shocked to read in the newspapers that the late lecturer died as a result of armed robbery attack. "No student or staff here does not know the source of his death," a student who wanted anonymity said.

The identity of the student killed yesterday had not been established as at press time while his remains have been depo-sited at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, UITH, mortuary.

The university's spokes-man, Gbolahan Balogun, confirmed the incident but also informed that the identity of the slain student had not been identified.

The state police commissioner, Mohammed Dikko Abubakar, in a telephone interview, confirmed the incident but said that he could not give any details on whether arrests have been made.

"I am aware of the incident and I have sent my team of investigators to the scene of incident. It is until they come back that I can provide answers to your questions," the police boss explained.
