Lecturer, 4 Students Killed in 3 Days

Serial tragedies struck the University of Ilorin with the news of the killing of a Geography lecturer, Dr. Abiodun Sunday Adeyemi, and four other students. The five were shot dead in circumstances traced to armed robbery and cult activities respectively. This has consequently forced students out of the hostels in the mini-campus.

The Ogbomosho-born lecturer was said to have been shot on the thigh at his Mubo Street home around Amilegbe area of the town."

He was left in his pool of blood for over two hours and by the time the sympathisers came to his rescue he was tired and unconscious which led minutes later to his death on the way to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH).

He was said to have been dreaded by students for his disciplinarian posture and being the department's screening officer, he may have insisted on standard leading to some students who were to be affected to have employed robbers' tactics to eliminate him.

Four years ago, Professor Ade Dapamu, was killed in similar circumstances that were traced to his (Dapamu) insistence that the staffers and students with fake certificates which his committee investigated should be sanctioned.

Police Commissioner for the state, Alhaji Mohammed Dikko Abubakar, confirmed the incident, adding that the Police Command had arrested one suspect who is assisting his men in the investigations.

The university authorities in a two-page press release signed by Gbolahan Balogun of the Information unit confirmed the don's death, blaming it on armed robbery attack.

The University regretted the loss but prayed to God to grant the family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss describing his death as a shock to the University community.

Last Thursday night there were reported long serial shootings that spanned over three hours within the mini-campus of the university. This incident was said to have driven fear into the hearts of the on-campus residents.

As at Friday afternoon when THISDAY visited the campus, students, mostly female, were seen packing out of the campus. Some who eventually spoke would not disclose their identities but narrated the harrowing experience they went through the previous night.
