Muslims Urged to Maintain Peace

Muslims in the country have been urged to maintain peace at all times.

According to Alhaji Hamid Alkali, Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Maiduguri, Muslims need to understand the concept of peace as explained in the holy Qur'an and Hadith.

He made the remarks at a seminar on "Islam: The Religion of Peace," organised by the Islamic Development Centre (IDC) in Yola at the weekend.

"Muslims should always preach peace and guide people to do what is good and dissuade them from evil deeds," he said.

Also speaking, Dr. Ibrahim Ma'azzam, a lecturer at the Bayero University, Kano, urged Muslims of different sects to set aside their differences and work for the development of the religion.

He called for peaceful co-existence between Muslim and Christians who, he said, should respect the rights of each other for a lasting peace in the country.

The IDC leader, Malam Saleh Gashua, said the seminar was organised "to promote good understanding of our religion among our communities and beyond."
